Doing the Edges
Every now and then I actually get around to doing the lawn edges in the back garden. I have the blister to prove it - and surveying the kitchen window view over coffee this morning was a satisfying sight (the undone bits hidden out the other windows).
Meditative really the pulling up of runners which have over run the edges and clambered over the sandstone borders (and comfy as it can be undertaken semi seated)...and apt for the new year.
What are the edges where the years mundanity has allowed unruly creeping? I became enamoured by new years resolutions whilst sitting illuminated by 9pm fireworks on the opera house forecourt chatting easily with those around us. It has a liturgical quality the discussing of our lives and the hopes for the future.
I'm trying to think of a way of bringing that ease and sacredness to the services on Sunday - so that even those who feel like they are marking time might find in a scrap of paper the words that encourage them to once again notice the edges that have become overgrown - and now that they too might join in the gardening ritual of doing the edging.
